Three hares pendant – Pewter openwork pendant on tin-plated snake chain.
The image of the three hares, joined by their ears, can be found in Christian, Jewish, Islamic and Buddhist cultures. They are found in British and European medieval churches, in a German synagogue, on Iranian metalwork and in Buddhist temples from China’s Sui dynasty. The three hares are also thought to represent the Holy Trinity.
The hare is also a sacred symbol for the moon. It symbolises fertility, longevity and abundance. In our Celtic history the Goddess Eostre (Ostara) was closely associated with the hare and the rebirth of nature in Spring. Today the Easter bunny has become a symbolic icon worldwide.
